88 :: Gered Mankowitz (born 1946) - Rock 'n' Roll Rollers Headbutt, 1970s, printed later, limited edition bromide print, signed by the artist and numbered 1/25 to the lower margin, also with embossed archive stamp, 16 x 12" *This photograph was taken during Gered Mankowitz's "Rock'n'Rollers" photo session, commissioned for Richard Branson's short-lived EVENT magazine, a listings publication launched to compete with Time Out. For the assignment, Mankowitz transformed a removals lorry into a portable photographic studio, parking it outside Notre Dame Hall on Leicester Place, just off Leicester Square in London's West End, during one of its popular Rockabilly nights. Participants were invited directly from the venue into the mobile studio, where Mankowitz captured a remarkable series of portraits celebrating London's vibrant rock 'n' roll revival scene.
