By the age of twelve, he was already performing solo at local venues. Over the years, he went on to write and record eight albums, produced in both Nashville and his home studio in Bristol Determined to own the signature model of his musical hero, Alan persuaded his local music shop in Bristol, circa 1964, to import a Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120, having seen one in an early Arbiter catalogue. A photo of Alan holding this guitar in 1964 is included in the sale In 1994, owing to his involvement in the country music scene, Alan was approached by Bristol City Council to help secure a headline country act for a city event. He reached out to contacts and eventually made direct contact with Chet Atkins himself, who agreed to perform at Bristol’s Harbourside on 29th July 1994. During Chet's visit, Alan accompanied him for various promotional appearances, and even hosted him at his home studio. A photograph documenting this visit is included in the sale At the Harbourside performance, Alan was asked by Gibson to present Chet with the prestigious Gibson Living Legend Award. Alan’s own band, Country FM, supported the show. It was after this performance that Chet kindly autographed Alan’s Gretsch guitar Around this time, Alan was also researching the history of country music. His work culminated in the publication of his book, Uncle Art: Country Music’s Founding Father, Arthur Edward Satherley (1889–1986), From Windmill Hill to the Beverly Hills. The opening chapters recount Alan’s early and later musical life, including the story of how he brought Chet Atkins to the UK in 1994 and the tale behind the signed guitar.
