518 :: Jack Bruce - 1950s Czechoslovakian three-quarter size double bass with maple back and sides, spruce top, ebony fingerboard, within soft case *Ex lot 16, The Jack Bruce Collection. Sotheby's, 29th September 2015 Jack Bruce first discovered the double bass at school, recalling: “In the corner at school was an old double bass. I just started playing it – it’s a very tactile instrument, a sensual feeling.” (Shapiro, Jack Bruce, p.43). Though initially restricted to cello due to his size, Bruce began learning double bass at age 16 and continued to favour it until switching to electric bass in early 1964. This example was acquired by Jack around 1968 and is one of only three double basses he owned during his lifetime. He frequently returned to the instrument for writing and performing, and famously composed the iconic bass line for ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ on his German model.
